General Information
Bali has gained a heavenly reputation among those who have seen and soaked up its beauty. The “island of the gods” as it is more commonly known, has a marvelous view of rice paddies, volcanic peaks and lush forests. Its lazy beaches are taken over by crowds as Bali is Indonesia's top destination yet still there are some magical places left untouched. Another aspect of Bali which attracts attention is its traditional culture that continues to thrive in the rural villages. Hinduism being the main religion with a tad bit of Javanese influence provides th ... And with the tropical climate and friendly people, it simply cannot be denied that this island is one of Asia's irresistible getaways!
Attractions
It is best to get your bearings first and learn a thing or two about the beaches found in Bali. In the south end, Kuta and Legian receive most of the touristy crowds. These long strips of beaches are lined with shops, bars and restaurants. Thus the energy here is very much fast-paced as the visitors are mostly the younger set. To the north is Seminyak, one of the better options as it is more quiet and clean, keeping a good distance away from Kuta.
Sanur is the next popular strip which attracts more of the mature holidaymakers who perhaps find its compact size more to their liking. The best-looking sands in Bali are found in Nusa Dua's exclusive resorts. Nearby is Ulu Watu well-known for its big waves attracting surfers from all over the world.
For the more remote beaches, there are quite a few interesting names on the list. Jimbaran Bay offers good clean waters, fairly safe from the noise of the airport seen in the horizon. Lovina Beach has black volcanic sand which may not be as attractive to some but it is a popular spot among diving enthusiasts with plenty of dive shops stand alongside cafes in the main road. Permuteran Bay is another calm black sand beach which serves as a jump off point for diving at Menjangan.
Moving away from the beaches, the better portion of Bali is a mesmerizing sight of temples and little villages set against the lovely scenery. The Ulundanu Water Temple at Bedugul is one perfect example! Found in Lake Bratan, a pagoda and shrine rest gently on green islets forming a picturesque centrepiece on water. Another lovely spot in Bali is the temple from which you can view the sunset. Just don't look at the depths below if you're afraid of heights; this temple hangs from the edge of a cliff!
For a taste of the culture, Ubud and the villages around it has plenty to offer. There are shows and dances, small galleries of fine arts and not to forget, great restaurants. Indeed, Bali's cultural centre promises a complete treat for your senses! Ubud's rice terraces is enough reward for those who want to enjoy more of the charming countryside.
Events
The Balinese use 3 calendars, so festival dates can change from time to time. The big one is Galungan Festival in which the whole island dresses up and celebrates the victory of good over evil for 10 days with colourful dances and bamboo poles decorated with flowers and fruits are erected in front of houses. The fun spills into the streets and climax with Kuningan. Rituals are held for the ancestral spirits.
Saka calendar's major festival is Nyepi. Locals believe that evil spirits appear at this time and that any noise or light will attract them further. Thus no electricity is used and people stay indoors, tourists included. It is best to observe this local tradition so as not to show disrespect.
The Balinese goddess of knowledge, Dewi Saraswati, is honoured with ceremonies such as blessing of books, scriptures and offerings are given to ensure the neverending quest for new learnings day by day.
One of the cultural highlights of Indonesia is the Bali Arts Festival in June. Here you can get a daily sampling of dances, musical performances and art exhibitions. Artistes from around the island gather at Denpassar to showcase their craft.
