Srinagar is a good place to start in the state. As the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, the city of close to 1 million people is a vital commercial and cultural hub. Srinagar, in fact, is Sanskrit for “wealthy city” and has a history that dates back well over 2,300 years. For hundreds of years, the city has been a desirable summer escape with everyone from Mughal emperors to British aristocrats. Contemporary visitors come for heritage architecture and gardens, photogenic scenery and Kashmiri culture and cuisine. Major points of interest in Srinagar include Jamia Masjid, Khanqah of Shah-i-Hamadan, Makhdoom Sahib Shrine, Sri Pratap Singh Museum and the Tomb of the Mother of Zain-ul-Abidin. Dal Lake and many fine Mughal Gardens lure countless tourists throughout the year.
