The picture-postcard backdrop of the Nilgiri Hills hints at the dramatic and spectacular landscapes that unfurl within the Western Ghats. One of the critical and nonpareil biodiversity hot spots on the planet, the Western Ghats, or Sahyadri Mountains, run from Gujurat and Maharashtra to the southernmost tip of India. The superlative mountain chain provides the Nilgiri Hills and indeed, Ooty, with a favourable climate and untold beauty. The mild milieu of the hill station drew the attention of the British Raj in the late 18th century and for decades, was the exclusive domain of the colonial authority and a prominent place of convalescence for soldiers. Today, this “Queen of the Hill Stations” is open for everyone to enjoy and offers landmarks like the Tribal Museum, Stone House, Saint Stephen’s Church and Centenary Rose Park. Above all else however, Ooty is a destination for incomparable rest and relaxation in a brilliant corner of India.
