Jolly Jodhpur
For a city once known as the Land of Death, Jodhpur in India is surprisingly cheery. And once you get used to the smell of cow and camel dung, it’s easy to see why. The ancient temples are Jodhpur’s biggest draws, the most magnificent being Baba Ramdevand the Santoshi Mata Temple in Lal Sagar. The Sadar Government Museum is a must, as are the sixth century remnants of the Umaid Gardens. But to really get a taste of local culture, simply wander through the shops on Palace Road. If there’s one thing all Jodhpurians agree on, it’s that one snuffbox is never enough…

JODHPUR EVENTS
The Camel Festival in January is a fun, though slightly smelly, affair. If you thought drinking camel milk was weird, wait until you see the camels’ haircuts…
February’s Nagaur Fair is one of India’s biggest animal fairs. If you’re not in the market for a camel, check out the entertainment on offer.
You’ll find hordes of elephants groomed to perfection and decked out in their shiniest sparkles at the city’s Elephant Festival in March.
Celebrate the sweltering heat at Jodhpur’s Summer Festival, held every June on Mount Abu. This party has three days of live music and bright parades, plus a hefty dose of fireworks.
The Marwar Festival is a two-day fiesta in September/October, celebrating the city’s culture with a series of extravagant parades, camel shows and folk music. And not a pair of funny horse-riding trousers in sight!
WHEN TO GO
- Jodhpur has warm winters and scorching summers.
- Jodhpur’s monsoon season falls between June and September, so be wary of sudden storms and flash flooding.
- October is one of the best times to visit. The temperatures and humidity are reasonably low and there’s less chance of rain.
GETTING AROUND
- Taxis are the best way to get around, but be wary of unmetered ones.
- Rickshaws are another popular way to move around, especially for tourists. They’re fun and cheap, but tend to be a tad slow.
- Buses operate to some of the tourist hotspots, but are far from reliable.
