Situated where the rivers Saraswati and Khan meet, the city of Indore in Madhya Pradesh is famous for its temples and architectural monuments, which have been influenced by French, Moghul and British designs. Indore was the capital city of the Holkars and many temples were constructed under the patronage of Rani Ahilyabai Holkar. Jain temples like the Kanch Mandir and Seth Hukumchand near it are also known for the unique blend of architecture. The Lal Bagh Palace, amidst a picturesque garden, has an English architectural designing touch. The Indo-Gothic style is very much discernible in the Gandhi Hall. But the chhatris or the cenotaphs of the Chhatri Bagh represent the Marathi style. The Annapurna Temple and the Bijasan Tekri on the top of the hill are the other attractions in the city.
Kasturbagram, named by the wife of Mahatma Gandhi, is only 8 kilometres (5 miles) away. Tourists also throng to the island of Omkareshwar located in the confluence of Kaveri and Narmada.
