I love old, boutique hotels! The Rex is close to Chinatown, the theater, Union Square shopping, the financial district and convention hotels. The staff is friendly, the hotel policies are green and the bar is cozy. Guests receive a complementary glass of wine each evening and a $5 voucher for every day the maids don't have to clean your room. One of my San Francisco favorites.

We traveled to San Francisco to beat the Texas heatwave (it was over 108 degrees in Texas while we were in San Francisco!) and also to celebrate our 29th wedding anniversary. We just enjoyed the city, spent a day driving up to Yosemite, another day in Bodega Bay, four days in San Francisco proper. We really enjoyed the quaint atmosphere of the Hotel Rex. We especially loved the friendly staff, including [...] at the front desk who brought his sweet little pug (Maximo) to work every day. Max would sit on his little pillow and greet everyone like a little hotel mascot. The hotel was quaint, clean and the staff went out of their way to make our stay pleasant. We loved the location near Union Square, restaurants and shops everywhere!

The Hotel Rex felt a little like Woody Allen's latest film, "Midnight in Paris," in that it's atmosphere was timeless, welcoming, and seemed to be of another era. The lobby/library area is its main charm and the gentleman behind the bar is the most gracious host and sir-mix-a-lot I've encountered in many-a-year. The concierge and staff were incredibly helpful and uniformly accurate in their recommendations. A true representation of the friendly charms of San Francisco. The rooms for me and my friends were well-appointed, clean, and well maintained, and the service staff respectful of a traveler's needs. Superp experience all the way around.

From the moment we stepped in to reception we were made to feel very welcome. This property has that "Olde Worlde" charm about it with complimentary coffee in the morning, and wine in the evening happy hour. Location is just great for retail therapy - 5 minutes walk to Department stores about Union Square. Cable car runs right by the hotel.

Very clean, tidy, and friendly hotel, with a lot of personality. It would be difficult to beat the Hotel Rex for location, at this price. Less than 5 minutes to Union Square, and attendant facilities. Front of house staff were well presented, friendly, knowledgeable and polite, and could not have been more helpful. The only gripe was the elevator. One more elevator would put the problem of long waits to rest. Would I stay again, you bet. Thanks for a great stay Hotel Rex.

Staff were very friendly and helpful and the location was excellent - just adjacent Union Square. Happy hour with free glass of wine for guests was appreciated and the lounge atmosphere was very pleasant. The lounge could have done with some lighting during the day for reading and the cafe attached to the Hotel was only average. Still there were plenty of restaurants and cafes nearby.

Perfect location to shops, cable cars everything! Safe to walk around at night and it was in close proximity to all tourist sites. Staff helpful, friendly, free wifi and access to computers if you don't have a laptop with you-free printing facility for boarding passes. Will definitely return!

The service was excellent. The only bad thing was the air conditioning. The unit was quite old and it made loud noises constantly. Everything else was perfect. The dog in the foyer made my day.

quirky little hotel near union square - very well located for the best shopping in town, some nice restaurants nearby, and the cable car to fisherman's wharf stops less than 100 feet away! it has a kind of shabbiness to it but i mean that in a good way, kind of shabby chic as opposed to unkempt. the bar is excellent and always busy, a good little hangout.

Staff very helpful. Nice how they put on free tea and coffee in the morning from the bar, and a free wine during happy hour. Very nice rooms, plenty of room. Excellent location right in the middle of downtown SF. Will definitely be back

I can't recommend this hotel enough. Located just a block away from Union Square, I was expecting a relatively small hotel room for the price I paid. In effect, I had a comfortable double room with good size bathroom and a good shower. The extras made a difference also: high quality iPod station beside the bed, free Wi-Fi throughout, free fresh coffee from 5am and free wine in the eveing. A well stocked mini bar with lots of natural water and food. Huge flat screen TV as well as iron and irioning board. The staff were really helpful, assisting me with online check-in for flights.
