The staff was great...minus the creepy and unpleasant overnight guy. The shared bathrooms were always clean. The double room that my boyfriend and I stayed in was beautiful in its details (wallpaper and wooden molding) and always the right temperature. Near the Union Square subway station for ease of travel.

Sharing bathroom was somewhat unique experience in New York. I guess it was OK. However, the hotel had some disturbing odor and it was somewhat uncomfortable. However, the location of the hotel was pretty good and its relative price was good.

This hotel meets my expectations for NYC; it was a cheap room and this reflected in the size and bedding. The bathrooms are all shared on each floor; the room is tiny. However, it is in NYC; I can't complain with the price given the outstanding location on the lower east side. Staff was friendly and courteous. I recommend for a low cost trip if you don't plan to spend much time in your room (and why would you if you are going to NYC? We only used the room to nap and sleep; the rest of our time was on-foot in the city).

Close to East Village, where you find many bars and night clubs. And easy access to metro station, from which you can arrive in JFK airport in 90 minutes. Small room and small bed, but I don't find sharing bathroom a big problem.

First time for us in New York and at this Hotel for 7 nights. It is in the Gramercy area. Has great restaurants close by and union square underground only 5 minutes away. If you like walking then you are only 30 mins away from Times Square which makes this Hotel very central. Staff are very friendly and helpfull especially James. Would definately stay here again and recommend to friends and family.

Basically an overpriced college dorm. Checked in, and then checked out IMMEDIATELY after seeing the accommodations - shared restrooms and rude staff. Called another hotel + booked a stay there and paid MUCH more. Never again.

Fine, if you don't mind shared bathrooms. Light switch in one bathroom was inside the shower

We didn't spend much time in the hotel but it was perfect for our trip. It's right in the middle of Wall Street/Ground Zero and Times Square/Central park. It was a great middle ground to travel between these two must-see sites. It was a clean room and a great price. We paid $200 per night for a three person hotel room. This was a far better deal than I could find anywhere else. The bathrooms were shared but very clean. I would absolutely recommend the hotel to anyone.

Loved this hotel! The old world charm was great! Room was small, had a sink in it, which was nice. Front desk staff was very helpful. A few blocks from Union Square. Will most definitely stay here again!

The personnel at the desk are not as nice as the rest of the personnel in the hotel... they are used to the New York lifestyle (serious face and in a rush). Rooms clean. Not a bad location.

Every time the heat went on the pipes made incredibly loud clanging noises. No one seemed to care when we reported it. Happened a few times in the night. Impossible to sleep through. Room is very small. Double means Double Bed....so small. Some extra hangers and shelves would have been greatly appreciated. And a towel rack in the bathroom would have been nice. Have to say that the room and bathroom were incredibly clean!

Really great price for staying in Manhattan. Nice Street. We had a very memorable experience while staying in NYC - mostly because of the people, everyone was so helpful especially the front desk employee at Hotel 17!

This is a European style hotel with smallish rooms and shared bathrooms. That said, we would definitely stay here again. The location was excellent, the rooms were clean, the hotel had a comfortable feel to it. The hotel is on a quiet street so the city noise didn't reach our room. The only complaint about the place us the Wi-Fi was pretty much non existent. There are two subway stops close to the hotel.

I read close to 300 reviews of this hotel before I booked it. I was VERY concerned about cleanliness, beg bugs & the sharing of bathrooms, which I have never done. This hotel received the highest ratings out of the handful of economical, shared bath hotels in Manhattan. Being a budget traveler I took a chance and booked three nights. And I have no regrets. * The hotel is very charming; very old world feel, from the molding to the elevator to the doors. I got a real sense of history here. * The location to Union Square was great. I felt safe walking from Union Square to the hotel at night by myself (I am a female). * My room was small, but had all that I needed. A bed, a sink, an air conditioner, a tv. When I go to NYC, I do not go to hang out in my hotel room. If you like lounging in your hotel room, this probably isn't the place for you. I leave early in the morning & don't return until very late in the evenings. The hotel matched my needs perfectly. * There was absolutely no sign of bed bugs or roaches; the box spring was covered in plastic to deter bed bugs. * Jason, the first shift front desk person, was so helpful & extremely knowledgable. * The bathrooms were unbelievably clean. Price is what drove me to book a shared bath hotel vs the conventional hotel. I was very impressed with the attentiveness & politeness of the cleaning staff. I own a cleaning company, so my standards are high. If you are a person who confuses 'old' with 'dirty' this isn't the place for you. Yes, it is an old hotel. Yet it was kept very clean. * The hotel provides towels, soap & shampoo. * You can't beat the price of this hotel. I stayed during high season & paid at least 1/3 less then what the standard hotels were charging. If you like the luxuries of hotels, don't stay here. If you like the newness of a hotel & it's rooms, don't stay here. I am so glad I found this place & will definitely stay here again. I now have a clean, safe & economical place to stay on my trips to NYC & I couldn't be more thrilled about this!

Convenient location just off Stuyvesant Park, near New School and Union Square. Surprisingly charming rooms accessed off narrow, somewhat dark halls. Lovely wood trim, built-in cabinets with fridge, TV, and safe. Sink area in room and shared baths in hall sparking clean. No street or hall noise though room air conditioner was a bit loud - but helpfully it came with a remote control so could be turned down from bed. Good reading lights. No breakfast room, but great coffee shops abound in the n'hood. Good price, would stay there again.

The hotel room was small but very nice. My girlfriend said it was cute and reminded her of victorian design. It was nice and was what I expected for the price and location. There was a great restaurant on the corner which was open 24 hrs which was awedome coming in late from a night of partying in NYC. The bathroom sitiation wasnt great, but I didnt have a problem with it once and barely saw anyone but the cleaners im the hall. Overall it was a nice spot for a one night stay in the city.

All in all good value for money. The room was a little hot and the air conditionning somewhat noisy but room very clean (good job [...])and the bed comfortable, shared bathrooms clean, great staff at reception ([...], the evening shift staff and the man holding the luggage). All an asset to the hotel.
