Despite the fact the Piraeus is part of the colossal Athens metropolitan area, it is wholly distinct from the venerable capital of Greece. The Saronic Gulf city has been the port of record for Athens for well over 2,500 years and has a superb collection of cultural landmarks to show for it. The best points of interest in Piraeus include the Archaeological Museum, Hellenic Maritime Museum, Historical Museum, Municipal Art Gallery and Panos Aravantinos Decor Museum. The city has a lively sports scene, most notably as the home of Olympiacos and the Faliro Coastal Zone Olympic Sports Complex, and boisterous festivals, restaurants and bars as well.
