Kos is the third largest in the Dodecanese island chain in Greece. Aside from offering sun-drenched white beaches and a vibrant nightlife, this Greek island has a long, rich archaeological heritage dating back to the prehistoric era. Tourists from all over the world flock to Kos to soak up the temperate climate and to wonder at the archaeological ruins and picturesque villages that dot the island.
The hot springs at Therma are enough reason to visit the island. Visitors can also spend a day in Kia to see what traditional lifestyles are like in this area of the Aegean Sea. For a day of fun with the kids, take some time out at Lido Waterparkor picnic at one of the many beautiful beaches, from the fine white sands of Kardamena, the beachside taverns at Kefalos, or the exotic emerald waters of Mastichari.
Those seeking a bit of history should visit the ancient Agoraon the east end of Kos, the municipal market, and the Casa Romana, an elaborate restored mansion dating from the Roman Empire. In town, you’ll find a good selection of clubs and bars offering music, food and libations well into the wee hours.
When to Go:
Kos benefits from a mild Mediterranean climate, making the island a popular sunny destination. Summer is the most popular season for tourists, but Kos is a temperate and relaxing place year-round. However, Kos can get very hot in July and August.
May to September (summer): 28-32°C (82-90°F).
October to November (fall): 18-22°C (64-72°F)
December to March (winter): 8-14°C (46-57°F)
March to May (spring): 10-22°C (50-72°F)
Getting There:
By plane, visitors to Kos can fly into theInternational Airportof Kos,nicknamed ‘Hippocrates’. Flights from Athens to Kos take about an hour.
Ferries are also a popular way for tourists to get to Kos, though travel times can be long. Depending on the season, visitors can ride the ferry from the port of Piraeus (10-15 hours), Alexandroupoli, Cyclades, Samos and Thessaloniki.
Once in Kos, travelling around the island is convenient and relatively inexpensive by bus, tram or taxi, but you may wish to rent a car, motor scooter or bike to get around this small volcanic paradise.
