A short trip northwest of Sami, the cave is the venerable home of the nymphs from Greek lore, a link that makes sense once you navigate the azure waters of Melissani’s brilliant, mythic-like lake. Kefalonia is also the kind of island that unfurls other random gems like the odd Roman necropolis, medieval monastic settlement and loggerhead turtle sanctuary. Specific points of interest to target include Saint George’s Castle, Korgialeneios Museum and Argostoli Archaeological Museum. The tiny village of Farsa was the apparent inspiration for Kefalonia’s fifteen minutes of fame in popular culture, courtesy of the blockbuster novel Captain Corelli’s Mandolin and subsequent Hollywood film of the same name.
