Greece is no stranger to UNESCO glory of course, with several of the most notable heritage sites on the planet. Of the lot however, Meteora has to rank as one of the best. After all, the natural and cultural site was chosen for inscription in 1988, together with the Medieval City of Rhodes, Mount Athos, Monuments of Thessalonika and Sanctuary of Asklepios at Epidaurus. Fair company indeed and only a year after the Acropolis of Athens and Archaeological Site of Delphi themselves became members of the UNESCO World Heritage team. Built on natural sandstone pillars, the six monastery landmarks that comprise Meteora demand some mettle, physical endurance and persistence to visit and tour. The experience however, is well worth the short trip from Kalambaka. Happily, the gateway town has a tidy ensemble of good accommodations, restaurants and bars for ample comfort and refreshment.
