Corfu Island History
- Angelokastro – This imposing 13th-century Byzantine fortress once successfully guarded the island from Turkish invaders.
- Church of Saint Spyridon – Built in 1589, this church is dedicated to the patron saint of the island and houses his relics.
- Palaio Frourio – Also called the “Old Fortress”, this Venetian citadel on the Aegean Sea now hosts cultural events.
- Palaia Anaktora – This complex of historical palaces, fortifications and gardens has been used by royalty.
- Achilleion – Once the summer home of a European empress, this historical site is one of the most popular attractions on Corfu Island.
Corfu Island Art & Culture
- Archaeological Museum – This large museum houses a number of ancient artefacts and sculptures found on Corfu Island.
- Byzantine Museum of Antivouniotissa – This museum is one of the oldest on Corfu Island and contains items from the 15th century.
- Liston – This Italian-style arcade is lined with cafes and is a popular tourist destination.
- Spianada Square – This green space is host to summer performances by Corfu Island’s famed philharmonic societies, like the Philharmonic Society of Corfu.
- Municipal Theatre – This modern theatre shows cultural events and performances.
Corfu Island Shopping
- Makrades – This small Corfu Island village sells local wine, olive oil and other treats, which makes it a great spot for unique gifts.
- Agios Spyridon Street – This is one of the best areas on the island to buy small handmade souvenirs at reasonable prices.
- Nikiforou Theotoki – This main shopping street in Corfu Town is known for its small shops selling local goods and handicrafts.
- Jewish Quarter – This area in Corfu Town has traditional shops selling crafts, leather goods, linens and household items.
- Agathi’s Lace Shop – This small and unique shop is known for handmade lace, a specialty of the island.
Corfu Island Events
Easter is a huge deal in Corfu. The island comes to life with parades, feasts, prayers and performances around March or April.
August lights up the skies and fills the bellies with The Varkarola.Choirs in boats sing cantades while fireworks and feasting takes place. Nice!
The Festival of Corfu in September is a cultural spectacle, with concerts, choruses and other artistic performances by Greek and foreign artists.
Christmas in Corfu is celebrated with music, carols and decorations across town.
New Year’s Eve in Corfu is celebrated in much the same way as it is the world over – with fun, laughter and maybe just a touch too much to drink.
When To Go
- Corfu has varied seasons, but enjoys warm temperatures throughout the year.
- The summer months of June, July and August receive up to 12 hours of sunshine and wonderfully warm temperatures. This is, of course, the most popular time for tourists.
- Autumn is the time of vintage plonk, and the town fills with a grapey smell that will drive wine aficionados crazy.
Getting Around
- There are busesdeparting from all villages of Corfu. Use these to get from village to village, then explore on foot.
- Taxisare available in town. You can either wait in a bay or call and book – but make sure they have the meter on.
- If you want to rent a car, it is usually cheapest to pre-book before you arrive. Keep in mind, however, that many of the roads are quite narrow and not suitable for larger cars.
