On the banks of the Rhine tributary Mosel River, the city of just over 100,000 people is a mere 50 km away from the capital of Luxembourg. As such, Trier has more in common culturally with the Grand Duchy and indeed, Alsace and Lorraine, than with the rest of Germany. The parallels are obvious in the Franconian dialects spoken on the streets and certainly, in the superb regional cuisine. Other points of interest include the Roscheider Hof Open Air Museum and Karl Marx House.
