Schwerin experiences four distinct seasons throughout the year. Winter temperatures will drop below zero at night, but summer brings daytime highs of more than 20ºC. There may be as much as 20 mm or 25 mm of snow during winter months, and more than 60 mm of rain each month from June to August.

Schwerin does not have an airport, but a few airports are located nearby in Parchim, Laage and Lüdersdorf. The closest is 30 km away in Parchim. From there, the city is just a short drive on the high-speed Autobahn. Railways connect this locale to Berlin and Hamburg.The public transportation in Schwerin consists of buses and trams. These are operated by a service known as NVS. Private transportation is also permitted.
