There is plenty to enjoy in the quaint medieval town of Rothenburg, Germany, as this city has maintained its romantic Bavarian aesthetic for several centuries. Visitors are treated to the picturesque Marktplatz upon entering the town. This is the urban centre for Rothenburg, where you can find shops, eateries and tourist venues. German souvenirs are extremely popular, and you will not be disappointed by all of the local shops. You can buy cuckoo clocks and other items at Georg Schopf, and beautiful Bavarian ornaments at Käthe Wohlfahrt, a large year-round Christmas mart. While strolling the Marktplatz, you will encounter St. George's Fountain and the City Councillors' Tavern. If you are inclined, you can check out the Medieval Crime and Punishment Museum. Some of the interesting historical pieces of architecture in Rothenburginclude St. Jakobskirche, which features a piece by celebrated German sculptor Tilman Riemenschneider, and the Town Wall, a 14th century fortification that surroundsthe city. When To Go
Rothenburg has four distinct seasons with hot summers and cold winters. The hottest months are June through August, with temperatures in the low 20s to around 30°C (68-86°F). These are typically heavy tourist months, since this is also the driest time of year. There are around seven hours of sunshine per day versus the two hours during winter. The coldest winter nights mostly stay in the -2°C to -3°C range (27-28°F). During the day, cold temperatures range from 5°C to 7°C (41-45°F), but it rarely freezes. Rothenburg receives about 21 cm (8 inches) of rain per month from June through July, but only around 10 cm (4 inches) during the rest of the year.

Getting There
You will likely be heading to Rothenburg as part of your drive along Romantische Strasse (Romantic Road) in Bavaria. The town is right along this popular route, and you will take Route 19 from the south or Route 25 from the north. If you want to take the expressway, use the Autobahn A7. Your exit will be 108 West, marked ‘Ansbacher Strasse’. The buses are crowded in summer, especially in the middle of the day. There are many bus lines that offer service to Rothenburg, including tour lines and coaches. If you use the train, you can go right to town, but make sure you get tickets for ‘Rothenburg ob der Tauber’, since there are other towns with similar names.
