Leipzig is a small industrial city located in Saxony, Germany, that is surrounded by several lakes. The New York Times ranked it as one of the top 10 cities to visit in 2010. This city is the hometown of Johann Sebastian Bach and his renovated Bach Museum.
If you find yourself in Leipzig in May or June, make sure to check out the Bach Festival of music. Lovers of art should plan to spend the day at Spinnerei, which was once the largest cotton mill in Europe. Immerse yourself in the more than 10 art galleries, various exhibits, restaurants, theatres and even a dance troop. Animal lovers will be glad to know that Leipzig is home to one of the largest zoos in the world with the largest selection of species. Those who enjoy parks will find the 27-hectare (67-acre) Belantis Amusement Park a fun place to go. It is a place of fun for the family with rides that have mythological themes, pirate acts, knight tournaments and much more. If you are looking for some grown-up fun, book a guided Drallewatsch tour. Drallewatsch is an old Saxony expression meaning to have fun and go out to dance and party. After a night of partying grab a cup of Joe, get some lunch and even learn some Leipzig history at Zum Arabischen Coffe Baum, a cafe, restaurant and museum all in one. If you find yourself in Leipzig during the Christmas season, make sure you get a chance to visit the largest freestanding Advent Calendar in the world. Leipzig is a great vacation spot any time of the year with a great assortment of things to do, see and learn.
When To Go
Leipzig has a fairly moderate climate. This means it’s a great travel destination any time of the year. Summertime in Leipzig is a great time to travel because the average temperature is 18°C (65°F). The funny thing is that the summer season is also the rainy season in Leipzig. July is the wettest month with about 15 days of rain, sleet, hail and snow.
December through February: Daily average -3 to 3°C (27-37ºF)
March through May: Daily average 8°C (47ºF)
June through September: Daily average 18°C (65ºF)
October: Daily average 13°C (56ºF)
November: Daily average 7°C (45ºF)
Getting There
Visitors will fly into Leipzig by way of the Leipzig-Halle Airport. A train leaves the airport headed to the city every 30 minutes. Leipzig has an excellent road infrastructure and is connected to the Autobahn highway. Leipzig is home to Hauptbahnhof, Europe’s largest railway station, which has a shopping mall. Local transportation is mostly provided by a tram system. Leipzig also has a decent taxi network. You can flag one down or find one ready and waiting at various locations in the city. Using a car in the city can be cumbersome, and you are charged a nice parking fee.
