While the heart of Kassel is largely the product of the Marshall Plan, the outskirts of the city teem with gems like the magnificent Schloss Wilhelmshöhe and awesome Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe. The late 18^th century palace and nonpareil park make it easy to fall in love with Kassel. At 2.4 km², the Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe is second to none in Europe as far as hillside parks go. The brilliant common began as a Baroque park in 1696, with subsequent elements like English garden accents, sculptures, ersatz ruins and aqueducts. The ultimate enhancement however, was the indomitable Hercules Monument. The copper Hercules sculpture, octagonal stone base and water stairs that flow from it form Kassel’s venerable linchpin icon. Other remarkable points of interest include the Lutherkirche, Brüder-Grimm-Museum and city botanical gardens. Kassel also hosts a number of diverse cultural festivals throughout the year.
