Seated on the boundary of the Black Forest, Karlsruhe is both a natural wonderland and an intellectual paradise, offering several Arts Festivals during the course of the year, including Das Fest, an open-air music festival and the annual European Culture Festival. For the serial shopper, the Kaiserstrasse offers a wide range of designer and gift items. WHEN TO GO
Karlsruhe has a mild climate for much of the year. In summer it averages around 19°C (66°F) with highs of 24°C (75°F). The winter temperatures average a cool 2°C (36°F), and rainfall is constant most of the year, at about 48 mm (1.9 inches) per month, but increases in the summer to around 68 mm (2.7 inches). Karlsruhe is at its finest in the warmer part of the year from around May to October. The Black Forest is a beautiful place to visit when winter brings a particularly lovely and serene ambience to the area. Take a tour of the Teutonic beauty that surrounds Karlsruhe and recharge yourself in the fresh mountain air.

GETTING THERE
The closest airport to Karlsruhe is Baden-Baden, located 40 kilometres (24.9 miles) south of the city. This small airport services a number of European destinations, and is accessible to the city via rental car, shuttle bus, taxi or high-speed train. Karlsruhe has a comprehensive tram/streetcar system that covers the city and many outlying areas, though the city centre is reasonably spaced so it’s possible to walk between many of the attractions, hotels, restaurants and places of interest. In warmer months, it’s a pleasant experience to hire a pushbike and take your time cycling around the city. For some novelty, try the small train that runs through the Baroque Palace Gardens, with diesel and steam powered models operating.
