With the Alps and best of Bavaria on Garmisch-Partenkirchen’s doorstep, the town is a popular sanctuary. Major points of interest include the Leutasch Dreitorspitze massif, Höllental gorge and Zugspitze, the pinnacle mountain peak in Germany at 2,962 m. Garmisch-Partenkirchen is actually two distinct market towns, a fact visitors may want to keep in mind in casual conversation with locals. In the run-up to the 1936 Winter Olympics, a certain Führer thought the twin hosts would be better off as one immutable municipality. While a hyphen indeed joins Garmisch and Partenkirchen in name today, the two Bavarian villages still maintain distinct dispositions. Garmisch for one, is decidedly modern while the cobblestones of Partenkirchen hint at more bygone charm. Whatever the case, the town is a gorgeous parcel of Bavaria with phenomenal recreation, culture, cuisine and hospitality in store.
