A tidy hamlet of less than 15,000 people, Füssen is a marvelous place to enjoy the best of Bavaria, from picture-postcard views to fairy tale architecture and traditional cuisine. The prominent Romantic Road stop has a long history and indeed, was a former outpost of the Roman Empire and later, a summer sanctuary for nobles and royalty. Today, Füssen draws tourists to premier attractions like Saint Mang’s Basilica, with fresco art from the late 10^th century, and come December, one of the best Christmas markets in Bavaria. The two main tourist magnets however, actually reside 3 to 4 km from Füssen. Two castles, Schloss Neuschwanstein and Schloss Hohenschwangau, reign supreme in Germany as perhaps the most popular attractions in the country. Neuschwanstein is famous as the 19^th century Romanesque Revival masterpiece built by Ludwig II of Bavaria in full view of Hohenschwangau, the castle built by his father Maximilian II. Both elicit hundreds of thousands of tourists to pass through Füssen every year.
