One of the most populous settlements on the lake is the German town of Friedrichshafen. Home to almost 60,000 people, Friedrichshafen is a district capital in the state of Baden-Württemberg and a terrific gateway to the Lake Constance region. A car ferry link to Romanshorn, Switzerland sends a steady stream of tourists and indeed, commuters, through Friedrichshafen on a daily basis. Thankfully, the town has some notable points of interest to discover. The best of the lot includes the Zeppelin Museum (Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin was from nearby Konstanz), Schulmuseum, Dornier Museum and the beautiful Schlosskirche. A popular convention and conference town, Friedrichshafen also has a vibrant little airport that services regular flights to North Africa, Central Europe and other destinations within Germany. Friedrichshafen also hosts some important annual cultural festivals and as a result, is a vital node in the Bodensee/Lake Constance area.
