While gems do reside on Darmstadt’s doorstep, the city has a vital legacy to explore. As a former state capital of the Holy Roman Empire, Darmstadt rose rapidly in importance from the 16 ^th century on - a notable tidbit for contemporary visitors indeed. Specific points of interest to consider off the bat include the Ducal Palace, Orangerie Palace and Church of Saint Ludwig. The fact that so few pre-Second World War landmarks of note remain in Darmstadt is a testament to the destructive precision of Royal Air Force raids. Both the Schlossgrabenfest and Heinerfest draw half a million people, on average, to the city in July and May.
