As one of the most famous spas in Europe, let alone Germany, Baden-Baden is a worthwhile stop in the Black Forest foothills of Baden-Württemberg. A phenomenal gateway to Alsace, France and indeed, the spectacular Black Forest region as a whole, Baden-Baden (literally “bath-bath”) is a venerable town.

The town so nice they had to name it twice has a long, proud legacy as a curative capital. The artesian wells of Baden-Baden have been a source of therapeutic comfort and luxury to a prominent cast of characters, from emperors of the Roman Empire to Queen Victoria, Johannes Brahms to Hector Berlioz. Two Russian novelists of some renown, Leo Tolstoy and Fyodor Dostoyevsky, immortalized the town of 55,000 people in distinctly divergent fashions in, respectively, Anna Karenina and The Gambler. Without a doubt, Baden-Baden has a certain epic quality to this day. Inside the legendary Kurhaus complex is the equally legendary Casino Baden-Baden. Dostoyevsky’s muse is a palatial monument to Old World nostalgia and a far cry from the Las Vegas Strip. The historic Festspielhaus Baden-Baden is a major opera house and concert hall and the Museum Frieder Burda a premier repository of contemporary and modern art. Other vital points of interest to consider in Baden-Baden include the Stadtmuseum and Neues Schloss. The incomparable 900 m2 Caracalla-Therme however, is the indomitable heart of the spa town.
