Poitiers is home to over 90,000 inhabitants and has a tidy, venerable cityscape for avid pedestrians to enjoy and photograph. The town has pre-Roman roots as a Celtic settlement and was possibly a provincial capital of the Roman Empire after the conquest of Gaul. Poitiers later fell to the Visigoths and, eventually, the Franks. In 732, Poitiers was the scene of a pivotal and bloody battle between a Christian army and the Umayyad Caliphate, a clash many scholars consider to be a sea change event in world history.
