The Arc de Triomphe is the exclamation point in a network of monuments that extend down the Champs-Elysées and through the heart of Paris. The construction of the colossal monument took decades to complete, from the time of commission by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1806 to the time of his second burial at Les Invalides in 1840. The pillars of the Arc de Triomphe contain the names of 660 soldiers who fought in the French Revolution and under Napoleon in the First French Empire. The eternal flame and Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, site of a sombre ceremony every Armistice Day, is perhaps the most indelible feature of the Arc de Triomphe.
Vitals and Tips
The Charles de Gaulle-Étoile Metro stop is the best way to reach the Arc de Triomphe.
Visitors can access the Arc de Triomphe as of 10:00 a.m. throughout the year. The Arc is free for children and students under the age of eighteen.
The only way to reach the observation deck of the Arc de Triomphe is to climb the forty stairs to the top.
The most popular time to visit the Arc is July 14, Bastille Day, when a huge procession parades down the Champs-Elysées.
