As a major Gallo-Roman city as far back as 2,000 years ago, more populous even than Lutetia, the ancient precursor to what is now Paris, Metz has a long and proud history. Later, the city was a prominent capital of the Merovingian dynasty and more impressively still, the cradle of the Carolingian dynasty. Today, Metz is a compact, erudite city of 125,000 people (430,000 in a vast metropolitan area) with some significant landmarks to explore. The brand new Centre Pompidou is a worthy complement to the original in Paris. Built in the 4^th century, Saint-Pierre-aux-Nonnains Basilica is one of the oldest churches in Europe. The star point of interest in the Lorraine capital however, is the exquisite 13^th century Cathédrale Saint-Étienne de Metz, with a massive nave and incomparable medieval glass-work.
