Limoges General Information

Limousin is a region of France few tourists truly take the time to explore, most notably in comparison to perennial faves like Alsace, Burgundy, Lower Normandy, the Pays de la Loire and Provence. One of the reasons, perhaps, is sheer size. Limousin is the most diminutive region in mainland France, with a populace of 730,000 people and a largely upland, rural landscape that brings with it a reputation for long, cold winters. As a result, for tens of millions of international arrivals to France, Limousin gets lost in the proverbial shuffle. ... Read more »

The prefecture capital of Limoges, however, is well worth a stay. The commercial, economic and cultural hub of Limousin is a city of close to 150,000 people, with a triple legacy of enamel, porcelain and Cognac oak barrel production. As a city, Limoges dates back more than 2,000 years to the Romans, who built baths, aqueducts, temples, a forum and amphitheatre in what was then Augustoritum. Today, flagship points of interest in the small city halfway between Paris and Carcassonne include the Abbey of Saint Martial, Botanical Garden of the Bishopric and the Castle of Chalucet.
