One of the most prominent destinations in Seine-Maritime and indeed, Normandy, is the handsome town of Le Havre. With a metro populace of close to 250,000 people, the vital city is, rather famously, home to one of the most remarkable tales of recovery in the wake of the Second World War. Indeed, Le Havre even has a UNESCO World Heritage Site to show for it. “Le Havre, the City Rebuilt by Auguste Perret” is the title of the official inscription, which honours the work of the master modernist and neo-classical architect in the city. The heritage site covers 1.33 km2 of Le Havre and includes structures built between 1945 and 1964. Important points of interest in and outside of the UNESCO zone include Le Havre Cathedral, St. Joseph’s Church, the impressive André Malraux Fine Arts Museum (Musée des Beaux-Arts) and Graville Abbey. A number of short side trips from Le Havre help round out a memorable summer holiday in Haute-Normandie, with Honfleur, Trouville-sur-Mer, Deauville and Caen high on the list.
