Activities abound for people of all ages in Chamonix, so if you aren’t experienced at climbing, hiking or skiing, there are still a multitude of options to consider. The shopping district houses everything from designer fashions to local arts and crafts, and if you’ve a mind for Chemin de Fer or Roulette, try your luck at the Chamonix Casino. For those who don’t like to brave the weather, there are a number of indoor climbing facilities for all levels of experience. The town of Chamonix is alive with activity both winter and summer, and is the perfect mountain getaway.
When To Go
Chamonix is situated in a glacial valley at an altitude of 1,035 metres (3,396 feet), and is cool year round. Temperatures average around -2°C (28°F) in winter and get up to about 20°C (68°F) in the summertime. Winter is the time for skiing, as snow falls from November to April. The ski lifts are open from October through to May, but the summer months are always best for climbing and hiking adventures, with good weather generally between May and October. Due to the mountainous region that it resides in, Chamonix can be prone to sudden bad weather at any time of the year, so it’s best to pack all weather gear and come prepared for anything.
Winter temperatures average -2°C (28°F) and rise to 20°C (68°F) during the summer months.
Mean monthly precipitation averages around 50 mm (2 inches) in Chamonix.
All ski lifts in Chamonix operate from October to May.
Getting There
Geneva International Airport, the closest to Chamonix, lies 90 kilometres (56 miles) to the southeast. There are several shuttle services available between the airport and Chamonix, or if you have an international driver’s license, rental cars are available and it’s a straightforward one-hour drive. Chamonix is small enough to see on foot, and buses depart daily for various locations of interest. A number of cable cars operate up and down Mont-Blanc, and there is a Cog Train that climbs the mountain for spectacular views of the glacier. The Mont-Blanc Express runs between Martigny in Switzerland and St. Gervais, and this narrow gauge train is an ideal way of moving between the small villages on the route.
Chamonix is one hour’s drive from Geneva International Airport.
Buses are available for tours to places of interest.
Cable cars and the Cog Train are great ways of getting up the mountain.
