The vertical lift Pont de Recouvrance is a proud post-World War II landmark but happily, is far from the only eye candy in Brest. The Tour Tanguy dates back to the 14^th century and contains a decent museum on the history of the city. The stone tower is not the dean of Brest monuments however. That title belongs to the exceptional Château de Brest which remarkably, sits on a Lower Paleolithic settlement from over 300,000 years ago. The castle compound itself has been in use for at least 1,700 years and as such, is without peer. No visit to Brest is complete without a tour of the foremost monument historique. Other points of interest worth a foray include the Musée de la Marine de Brest, which chronicles the city’s maritime history, the phenomenal Océanopolis aquarium and two first-class botanical gardens.
