The Avignon Rundown
Avignon is an ancient city located in the Provence region in southern France. History, art, music and attractions are plenty within the fortified walls of this beautiful city. Avignon itself is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is a very popular European holiday destination. Visitors must start their vacation off right with a stroll down the Rue de la Republique, Avignon's main boulevard. Here, tourists will catch a glimpse of the astounding architecture that makes up this city's religious heritage.
As the day really gets started, go sightseeing. The many ramparts, bridges, buildings and churches are a sight to behold. The Notre Dame des Doms and Pont d'Avignon display the city's long, rich history. For a bit of culture and art, the Calvet Museum, the Musee Angladon and Papal Palace will give tourists an understanding of what Avignonis all about. With so many activities to choose from while visiting Avignon, visitors should plan to stay awhile during this lovely French holiday.
When To Go
With a Mediterranean climate, Avignon has comfortably dry summers and cool winters. The city is often windy, but nothing to write home about. The most idyllic months for visiting Avignon are May and June. Although the sun is intense, it is pleasant and warms the waters for swimming. As for late summer and early fall, September through November is still warm and most of the crowds have dissipated. In winter, the city is calm and quiet, and the weather is bearable though cool. Some tourists who prefer the emptiness really enjoy coming to the region during December through March.
May through August: Daily high 27°C (80°F)
September through November: Daily high 20°C (68°F)
December through February: Daily high 13°C (55°F)
