With some 55,000 people, Annecy is a perfect compromise between sleepy village and frenetic metropolis. There is life here but the pace is decidedly nonchalant and leisurely exploration on foot yields tremendous results. After all, the Annecy cityscape is not altogether unremarkable. Built in the 16^th century, the beautiful city cathedral, Cathédrale Saint-Pierre d'Annecy, is a national monument of France. The prominent church however, is far from the most venerable landmark in Annecy. That title is held by the pre-eminent Palais de l'Isle, a canal castle in the middle of town. Another important monument historique in Annecy is the formidable Château. The impressive 12^th century castle looms over Lake d’Annecy and requires a few hours to fully appreciate. There is much more than mere medieval fortifications to admire here. The grand monument contains a Museum of Popular Alpine Art and a fine aquarium-cum-archaeology exhibit in the Alpine Lakes Regional Observatory.
