The small town of 13,000 people, some 27 km east of magnificent Tours, is also at the epicentre of the fabulous “Loire Valley between Sully-sur-Loire and Chalonnes” UNESCO World Heritage Site. The vital heritage inscription celebrates the cultural and architectural landscape of the Loire, most notably in the form of the nonpareil region’s ensemble of grand châteaux. While one could of course, use Tours as a jump-off to explore the Loire, Amboise is an underrated and inspired choice. The commune is not without some excellent landmarks, from the Close Lucé and Hôtel Joyeuse Musée de la Poste, to the obvious flagship icon, the Château at Amboise.
