Lahti is the Finnish word for “bay” and indeed, the descriptive moniker for the handsome Päijänne Tavastia region capital is apt. A curve of Lake Vesijärvi shoreline defines the geography and development of the city and injects Lahti with copious scenic charm. The city is a terrific base from which to settle in and subsequently, shove off to explore the vast interior of Finland, most notably Lake Päijänne and the lovely, Alvar Aalto landmark-laden city of Jyväskylä. While in Lahti of course, it pays to discover what the city has to offer. The Ski Museum is first and foremost, a venerable must, and a wonderful nod to Lahti’s Nordic winter sports legacy. Other telltale points of interest include Sibelius Hall, the brilliant Ristinkirkko (built by Alvar Aalto in 1978), Lahti Historical Museum and the curious Lahti Poster Museum.
