Saaremaa Island General Information

Estonia’s pride and joy may be the UNESCO World Heritage City of Tallinn but the Baltic beauty has a formidable and inordinate array of gems beyond the capital. While a clandestine secret in Europe no more, the vast majority of tourists to Estonia have yet to venture outside of Tallinn’s gorgeous Old Town. When they do however, Saaremaa Island is often the target of first resort. The premier island in Estonia is home to 40,000 fortunate inhabitants and a slew of attractive towns. With a singular microclimate, geography and ensemble of fauna and flora, Saaremma is a supremely popular destination with domestic tourists. A de facto day trip, weekend and holiday escape in Estonia, the island’s core points of interest include Kuressaare Castle, folk windmills and the brilliant coastline of Leisi Parish. While Kuressaare Airport provides access to Saaremaa from Stockholm and Tallinn, the ferry ride from the mainland, Hiiumaa Island or Muhu Island is well worth it. As a picturesque haven of unspoilt beauty and pure Estonian culture, Saaremaa is without peer.
