Elmbank Hotel York

I decided to take my wife back to the hotel where we had our wedding reception 23 years ago. As soon as we pulled up outside we noticed the appalling state, dirty window, cigarette butts everywhere and a general look of untidiness. The general public areas were ok but in need of decorating. The bedroom was through a maze of shabby corridors, it was dismal, small, gloomy and shabby. The bathroom was slightly better. My wife was very disappointed, but she knew that we had only paid £41 for the night. We came home very late, my wife slept in her clothes and departed very early. Walking through through the corridors on the Sunday morning, there was a terrible smell of human excrement!

If you just want somewhere convenient for a night or 2 it was fine - parking possible; could walk into York so convenient for what we wanted.

You pay for what you get. This place was pretty basic but ok for a night away when you arent going to be spending too much time in your room.

Have stayed here before. Easy walking distance from station.Too early to check in but very happy to accommodate our luggage. Room very comfortable -small en-suite but big enough.Open fire in the period lounge made it cosy for a pot of coffee. Walking distance to all of Yorks attractions.

The rooms were good, what we were expecting for the bargain price we paid, however we were amazed by the outside, reception and lounge. It is a beautiful hotel with affordable rooms. It was also only a 30 min walk from town.

Hotel is in a quite location 10 min from the city centre rooms were clean and tidy and the staff were polite and helpful we found that both the evening meal and breakfast was well prepared and service was a good standard would use this hotel again and would recommend this to anyone who does not mind a short walk away from all the noise of the city centre hotels

Only stayed overnight and only needed a shower and a bed for the night. Not a 5* establishment, but location is good for York centre and it is adequate for a night or two stay. For any "special" events I would look for something else.

Normal price listed as GBP130/night. We thought we were getting a bargain at GBP49 for a twin. The room was tiny, one of the blankets was child size and we had to make the beds ourselves. They do have large rooms also, but to suggest our room was normally 130 pounds is frankly dishonest. On the plus side, the lobby area is lovely as is the staff, with the exeption of the surly young woman at reception in the mornings. Our room was barely worth the budget price we paid. We won't be back.

Was disappointed to find that although when booking my 3 night stay I'd indicated I needed to check in close to midday, when I arrived at 12.30pm I was told I couldn't check in. No-one even checked if my room was ready; I was merely told repeatedly that 'check in is from 2pm'.

A rooms were a little tired, but the foyer etc of hotel was nice. The young blonde girl on reception seemed like she did not want to be there - did not make eye contact or ever smile - not good customer relations.

Stayed in the building across the road (Elmbank Lodge) and the room was dark, not very clean and poorly maintained. The double bed was two singles put together, with uncomfortable ridge down centre. Accommodation was best described as "adequate". Service at front desk and at breakfast (which was a buffet and not that good) was unhelpful and unfriendly. I would not stay there again.

Great location, only 10 minute walk from the town centre, which I would recommend as taxi's are erratic. Wonderful decor in lobby and bar area, very charming. Room's are pretty basic and mine wasn't particularly warm, which was a shame as it was a very cold weekend! Bathroom and shower were very clean and spot on. Overall, good value for money and very friendly staff who are very accomodating.

Friendliness & Service from Staff was good. No lifts in Hotel & not informed of this until checked in & I had a heavy bag that I had to carry up 2 flights of stairs. Breakfast was a bit pricey for what you got given.

We found the staff were very ill-informed about services. When we arrived they did not have details of 3 rooms we had booked months before, despite the fact that we had given all the names of the guests at the time of booking. It was nearly impossible to get a drink from the bar and when we did so we had to point out the bottles of spirits to the "barman". The rooms were OK, but very old. Overall we would not return.
