Quality Quito
Peer through the volcanic peaks encircling the Andean valley and you will discover Quito, a city filled with colonial grandeur and natural tranquillity. With a proud Ecuadorian life force that is as vibrant as it is unassuming, it is no wonder that Quito has held World Heritage status for over 30 years. Be prepared for a sensory overload in the city that is nothing short of breathtaking. Show-off! ... Read more »
Hold on tight and hitch a ride on the world’s second-highest cable car, the terrifying (in a good way) Telefrico, affording extraordinary views of the entire city and half a dozen volcanoes. For some serenity, delve into Ecuador’s expansive ecosystem at the Botanical Gardens, or just take a stroll through the shops and enjoy a robust South American coffee on the patio along the romantic, cobblestoned Calle de la Ronda.
QUITO’S TOP 10
10. Casa de la Cultura Like a patchwork quilt of local artists, this great collection is free to see. |
5. Itchimbia Cultural Complex Watch the light fade from Quito’s old churches as the sun disappears behind the mountainside at this hilly park. |
9. Mitad del Mundo Just outside town is where you will literally find the middle of the world… or at least where it was proven that the Earth is in fact a sphere. A very interesting visit. |
4. Museo Mindalae From the Andes to the Amazon, this museum showcases the variety of Ecuadorian culture. |
8. La Vírgen del Panecillo Head to the top of El Panecillo and marvel at the masterful winged statue of the Virgin Mary. |
3. Iglesia de la Compañia de Jesus Once partially destroyed by a terrible fire, this now-restored church is considered the most beautiful in the Americas. |
7. Capilla del Hombre Home to the huge canvases of the ‘Latin American Man’ by Ecuador’s renowned contemporary artist Oswaldo Guayasamin. |
2. Museo del Banco Central You could go to see the Amazonian gold, but it’s the whisky bottles in the shape of animals that are the real talking points. |
6. Museo Guayasamin Pre-Columbian, colonial, independence and contemporary artworks abound. |
1. Conjunto Monumental San Francisco Delve into the artistic masterpieces held in this colossal 16th century church. |
