Sosua Hotels

One of the most popular beach targets in DR is Sosua. The resort town is mere minutes from Puerto Plata International Airport and 24 km from San Felipe de Puerto Plata, a vital city of 150,000 people. Aside from the fact that Sosua, like the rest of the north coast of the Dominican Republic, is a major magnet for tourists, the small city of 45,000 people has a remarkable history. In 1938, the infamous military dictator Rafael Leónidas Trujillo Molina, or El Jefe, gave land and refuge to approximately 800 Jews from Germany and Austria. Despite subsequent assimilation and emigration to Israel and the United States of America, descendants still operate a synagogue and museum in Sosua to this day. Without question however, the primary allure of Sosua and the Puerto Plata area is the beach. A multitude of beach resorts, from upscale to modest, accommodate tourists throughout the year. Outside of the coast, visitors to Sosua often make time for El Choco National Park and Isabel de Torres National Park.
