The Brno Rundown

As the cultural centre of South Moravia and one of the largest cities in the Czech Republic, Brno offers a number of historical and cultural attractions for visitors. Freedom Square is the town centre where all the festivities take place. If you head to this spot, you will find most of the central Brno attractions within a short walk. One such landmark is Špilberk Castle, a prison fortress and torture chamber from the Austro-Hungarian Empire era that is now a museum and café. The Old Town Hall and Petrov Cathedral are usually on most tourists' sightseeing lists, and the beautiful Baroque sculptures and tomb of mummies at Capuchin Monastery are a big draw in Brno as well. You should visit the Moravian Museum if you want to learn about the history of this region. The main exhibit area is in Dietrichstein Palace, but there are also satellite exhibits at the Anthropos Pavilion and the Bishop Courtyard. You may also peruse the Moravian Gallery, which offers exhibits of both modern and historical Moravian artworks. Brno was the headquarters for renowned geneticist Gregor Mendel, and so it is only fitting that The Mendel Museum of Genetics is based there as well.

When To Go

Brno has a fairly moderate climate, but it rains most of the year. The driest month is March, but you should still pack rain gear any time you travel to this area. Brno winters run from December to February. They can be very cold with freezing temperatures at night and chilly days around 1-2°C (34-36°C). The sun is also scarce in winter months, only peeking out for a few hours in the daytime. Summer (June through August) is probably the best time to visit Brno and not just because it is warmer. Many of the tourist attractions will be open only during this season. Summer highs are typically 23-27°C (73-81°F), and the humidity is higher.

Getting There

There is a small airport in Brno, but flights are limited, making Prague a more likely arrival point. Brno is easy to access via the rails as it is a major stop along two routes from Prague: the Prague-Vienna line and the Prague–Bratislava–Budapest line. Once you arrive at the Brno Main Rail Station, you can walk to a number of attractions, as the station is right in the centre of town. If you are driving from Prague, you can take the D1 toll highway or one of the many national roads. Several major coach lines offer trips from Prague and a plethora of other European cities. You can travel directly from the Prague airport to Brno via coach bus or train as well.
