Limassol is Cyprus’ second-largest city and is situated on the enticing southeastern coast of Akrotiri Bay. Limassol’s main street runs through the entire city, and is bustling with cafés, shops and restaurants. TheOld City retains much of its stylish character, built on the Old Fishing Harbour and offering a glimpse back in time. Far more contemporary is Limassol’s vibrant nightlife, with cabarets, discos and bars pulsating happily away. Limassol History
- Kourion – An ancient ruin considered to be one of the best archaeological sites on the island.
- Amathus Ruins – One of the local buses passes right by the ruins, and the site is close to several of the hotels.
- Omodos Village – A historic village in the Limassol District.
- Limassol Castle –The castle is where King Richard reportedly was married.
- Kolossi Castle –You should check out this ancient castle.
Limassol Art & Culture
- Limassol Wine Festival – Celebrate the yearly grape harvest with dancing, music, traditional Greek cuisine and wine at the Municipal Gardens.
- Carnival – Begins on the Thursday of Kreatini, 50 days before the Orthodox Easter. Parades and formal dress parties are the highlights of Carnival.
- Russian Cypriot Festival – Annual event organized by the Russian embassy, the Cyprus Advertiser and the Limassol Municipality.
- Beer Festival – Annual event at Molos Waterfront.
- European Dance Festival – European dance groups come to compete with Cypriot dance groups.
Limassol Shopping
- Beach Shopping District – A great place to buy local handcrafts, jewellery and souvenirs.
- Makarois Avenue – Array of small boutiques and shops, upscale shops and showrooms.
- Orphanides – An interesting selection of stores in an attractively designed mall.
- Carrefour – Prices are reasonable and the food selections are fresh. Debenhams, in the same area, was formerly a Woolworths.
- Sigma Bakery – The bakery has several locations and sells delicious homemade pastries and bread.
Gay & Lesbian Limassol
- Beaches – Beautiful sandy beaches including Nissi Beach in Ayia Napa, Governors Beach and Dassoudi Beach.
- Scorpions Platinum Club – Popular club with themed nights, including Greek Night, R&B and Classy Night.
- Rainbow Residence – A charming bed and breakfast residence in Limassol, exclusively for gay and lesbian guests.
- Alaloum Gay Club – The original gay bar in Limassol is gay and straight friendly.
- Pi – One of the most trendy and stylish cafe/bar establishments in Limassol.
Limassol Events
The Easter Carnival is an annual highlight.A colourful street party begins with the Carnival King entering the city. The 10-day celebration is awash with colourful floats, people in fancy dress, singing and dancing.
The Cyprus Rally in mid-May is a three-day event that squeals through the streets of Limassol and the dangerous mountain roads of Troodos.
The Russian Cypriot Festival kicks off in June, with exhibitions, Cypriot and Russian dancers, singers and musicians, plus kids activities.
Head to the Municipal Gardens in August and September for the Limassol Wine Festival. Watch 600 years of winemaking tradition in action, then taste. Repeat for maximum effect.
October’s Lemesia attracts athletes from around the globe to participate in 10 days of boxing, karate, triathlon, marathon, shooting, cycling and much more.
When To Go
- In spring (March to April), the weather is a mild 18 to 28ºC degrees (64-82ºF), and very pleasant.
- Like the rest of Cyprus, Limassol enjoys an extended summer from May to October, when the weather is generally perfect for the beach.
- September through to Decemberis a good time for visiting if you want to avoid the tourist hordes.
Getting Around
- Limassol is eminently walkable, and the best way to get the most out of the city.
- Intercity buses will take you to other city centres around Cyprus daily.
- Boat cruises to neighbouring ports and around the Mediterranean are a popular choice, but make sure you have plenty of cash with you.
