Home to a metro population of more than 220,000 people, Rijeka is a vital seaport on the Adriatic Sea and has enough charm to entice visitors to stick around for a few days before requisite side trips to the likes of Opatija, Lovran, Crikvenica and Krk island. As the commercial, cultural and economic heart of Primorje-Gorski kotar County, Rijeka offers some very decent points of interest to explore. Flagship landmarks include Saint Vitus Cathedral, the Capuchin Church of Our Lady of Lourdes, Trast Castle and the National History Museum. The annual Rijeka Carnival is a major event in the area and Ivan Zajc Croatian National Theatre hosts a stellar line-up of performances throughout the year. Rijeka also has some of the best restaurants and nightlife on the Kvarner coast.
