The Yantai Rundown ... Read more »
The picturesque port city of Yantai is located in China’s Shandong Province on the coasts of the Bohai Sea and the Laizhou Bay. Yantai’s geography is as rich as its past. This region is marked by mountains, plains, basins and 121 rivers, and has been ruled by feudal lords, emperors, Britain, Germany and Japan. Today, Yantai is a Chinese economic and industrial centre with plenty of attractions for tourists to see and do.
The Yantai Museum is a great place to explore Yantai’s long and rich heritage. The promenade is a fantastic place for strolling and admiring the water views, and you can watch the magical, illuminated fountains along Binhai Road. Or you can shop for unique, carved jade souvenirs or straw-woven handicrafts in Xinzhuang Street or at the Sanzhan shopping mall. The 923-metre Kunyu Mountain offers stunning, panoramic views, as well as a mountain cave holding eight Taoist statues. Yantai’s pleasant climate has helped the region gain fame for its apples, cherries, pear and peaches. Don’t forget to sample the abundant local seafood, as well as wines from Changyu, which is China’s oldest winery, which you might find along Chaoyang Street, the bar street in Yantai.
When To Go
Yantai enjoys a temperate climate, being neither too hot in summer nor too cold in winter, although its northern China location means it can be humid. Rainfall is highest in July and August, which sees averages of 156-167 mm (6.1-6.6 inches) per month, whilst the lowest is in January and February, when average monthly rainfall decreases to about 10 mm (0.4 inches). June through August are the hottest months, when average highs are from 27-29°C (81-84°F). The average annual temperature is 11.8°C (53.2F)
If you are looking for a quiet and relaxed holiday, you will do well to avoid a visit from either 1st to 3rd May, or 1st to 7th October, as these are national holiday periods when millions of domestic tourists and a significant number of international visitors make a beeline to the region.
