Within a region that borders Central Asia, Tibet, India and Mongolia and is more Uyghur than Han in nature, Urumqi is the ideal launch pad for intrepid travelers to get out and explore a rugged and diverse part of the world.
As a city however, Urumqi is no slouch. With a population over 2.5 million people, it holds the distinction of being the most remote urban area from any sea or ocean coastline. The city skyline is dramatic, with new high-rise developments in stark juxtaposition with the vast wilderness beyond. Superb points of interest include Nahu Square, Xinjiang Silk Road Museum and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Museum.
