One notable trait is the city's geographic position, which once understood, helps explain why Taiyuan was a capital as far back as 500 BC. With mountains on three sides, Taiyuan's role as a military base in ancient times is self-evident. The mountains now provide a base for heavy industry and indeed, many of the city's tourist attractions. These include the foremost symbol of Taiyuan, Twin Pagoda Temple, as well as the Tianlong Shan Stone Caves, where visitors can enjoy sculptures that date back to the Tang Dynasty, well over a millenium ago.
