1. Daji For a perfectly preserved ancient tunnel and housing surrounded by spectacular scenery, Daji can’t be beaten.

Shangyu History

  • Orchid Pavilion (Lan Ting) – Not the original location where the famous poem of the Jin Dynasty, "Preface to the Poems Composed at the Orchid Pavilion", is set.
  • Anchang Ancient Town – With architecture in the style of waterside South China, this town is historically protected. Try the signature cuisines like anchang sausage.
  • Shiwang Buddhist Temple – Restored many times, locals and visitors come to pray for health, happiness and success.
  • Wang Chong's Tomb – Wang Chong was one of three honoured ideologists, his opinions of Confucianism were controversial at the time.
  • Caoe Temple – Temple that holds significance to the Baiyue people, known for sculpture, calligraphy and artefacts.

Shangyu Art & Culture

  • Zhou Enlai's Ancestral Residence & Memorial Hall – Ming-style architecture consisting of rows of three buildings with an inner courtyard.
  • Shaoxing Grand Theatre – Watch a traditional all-female Yue Opera.
  • Mausoleum of Yu the Great – Composed of temples in Kuaiji Shan Scenic Area.
  • Lu Xun's Former Residence – Many consider Lu Xun a major figure in modern Chinese literature.
  • Emperor Shun Temple – This temple located on the top of a mountain of Shangyu is a tribute to a past emperor.

  • China Textile City – Mini indoor city that sells wholesale textiles, with restaurants, hotels and a cinema.
  • Shaoxing Evening Street – A great place to look for bargains on toys, clothing and regional art.
  • Shaoxing Antique Market – Over 200 shops that sell antiques from books to cultural relics. Keep your eye out for fake antiques.
  • Carrefour – This store in Shangyu has both Western and regional products.
  • Datong Shopping Mall – Souvenirs that are designed with unique characteristics and Chinese calligraphy.

Shangyu Gay & Lesbian

  • Casablanca – Performances from great bands three times weekly and cocktail parties three times monthly.
  • Qing Teng Teahouse – Famous teahouse in Shaoxing with a courtyard styled to unwind after discovering the surrounding sites.
  • Shaoxing Grand Theatre – Holds classic traditional concerts and modern dramas all year.
  • Leiden Winning Hotel – A superb restaurant and sauna within the centre of the city.
  • Shangyu Walking Street – Stroll the street of this neighbourhood with glimpses of the mountains.

Shangyu Events

The flora of Shangyu comes alive at the annual Spring Festival in January.

Be prepared for a firecracker of a Chinese New Year in late January or early February.

Why so much fuss over a humble rice dumpling? Find out at May’s Dragon Boat Festival.

Float on over to the West Lake in July for the annual Water Lily Festival celebrations.

For acrobatics, folk music and all-round merriment, make sure you are in Shangyu in August for the Moon Appreciation Party.

When To Go

January is the frostiest month in Shangyu, with temperatures usually averaging around 4°C (39ºF).

In summer (June to August), temperatures can reach 28°C (82ºF), which is perfect for getting out and about.

Getting Around

Train is a good way of getting around the sprawling city.

Taxis are plentiful and reasonably cheap – just make sure you get someone to write down your destination in Chinese!

The roads are in good condition around Shangyu, so a great way to see the countryside in your own time is to rent a car.
