Shanghai Hotels near French Concession

As a land concession of France for close to a century, the quarter is full of superb period architecture. A mix of old and new, remarkable and distinctly European points of interest in the district include St. Ignatius Cathedral and Xujiahui Library. Above all else however, the French Concession is a spectacular borough of Shanghai to explore on foot. The tree-lined district is chock full of cafés, studios, quaint shops, restaurants and sublime hotels. Indeed, the French Concession is a veritable village within the immense metropolis.

In the interwar period, the French Concession was home to a significant population of Russian émigrés. The district still has two Russian Orthodox churches from the pre-World War II era.

The French Concession has a considerable number of high-end residential developments and heritage mansions, namely in the vicinity of Hengshan Road (formerly Avenue Petain).

The area is also a vibrant nightlife district, especially popular with Shanghai’s expat community.
