Favourite Cities and Hotels in China

Familiar to some as "Chungking", Chongqing is by some definitions, the most populous city in the world. The provincial-level municipality, a tribute to China's complex demographic divisions, contains 33 million people, or roughly the population of Canada. How you classify the city is up for debate though, since only 5 million people dwell in the urban heart of Chongqing. The growth rate of the municipality is not open to argument however, as Chongqing's incessant urban expansion exceeds the ambitions of anywhere else in the world, let alone the rest of China.

As the former capital of the Ming Dynasty, Chongqing is more than just a poster child for China's obstinate thirst for capitalist supremacy. The city contains some magnificent heritage landmarks, from The Great Hall of the People to Huayan Temple. The World Heritage Dazu Rock inscriptions represent the best tourist attraction in Chongqing municipality. Over 100,000 characters on the rock walls date as far back as the 7th century and espouse Buddhist, Confucian and Taoist beliefs.

When To Go

Chongqing has very humid conditions for most of the year due to monsoons influencing the climate. Known as one of the ‘Three Furnaces’ along the Yangtze River, Chongqing has some of the longest, hottest summers in China. Highs of 33-34°C (91-93°F) are prominent in the months of July and August. As for winters, they are short, mild and damp. Chongqing’s location in the Sichuan Basin causes the city to have one of the lowest sunshine totals in China.

  • June through August: Average daily high 27°C (81°F)

  • September and October: Average daily high 22°C (72°F)

Getting There

By air, the Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport is served by international flights from many cities from around the world. Located just to the north of the city’s centre, the airport provides a variety of transportation options to easily get passengers to their accommodations.

Trains arrive daily in Chongqing, including the T9/T10 express train from Beijing. The longest railway from Chongqing is from Harbin, which takes almost 50 hours.

By bus, long-distance buses go to Chongqing from just about anywhere. There are many routes like Chengdu and Xian that keep Chongqing well connected to other cities in the area. There are two bus stations: the west facing Chaotianmen Station, and the east facing Chen Jiaping Station. These stations can be rather hectic, so visitors should check with their hotel for purchase of tickets.
