Combing Changzhou
In Chinese terms, Changzhou is a small town. To the rest of us, it is a bustling city with over 4 million inhabitants. One of the top treasures in China’s Jiangsu Province, Changzhou is set amongst spectacular scenery and dotted with brightly coloured temples and magical pagodas. ... Read more »
Most of Changzhou’s rich history revolves around combs. Seriously! Changzhou’s production of combs goes back thousands of years and they remain one of the city’s top exports. If you’re sceptical, visit the Changzhou Palace Combs Factory (just look for the big, comb-shaped topiary out the front) and historic Comb Alley. Hair implements aside, the city also offers some pretty epic shopping. Yanling Road and Nandajie Street have the best mishmash of cheap gems and big-name department stores, where you can find gifts for even the baldest of friends…

WHEN TO GO
- Changzhou has mild summers and cold winters. Summer sits around 25°C (77°F) and winter 2°C (36°F)
- While every month sees healthy rainfall, June and July gets torrents of it.
- Spring is one of the best times to hit the city. The plum trees in Red Plum Park are in full bloom and the lush surrounds are at their, well, lushest.
GETTING AROUND
- The BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) is cheap (about one yuan) and efficient, and even the shortsighted can’t miss the bright-blue vehicles.
- Taxis are the second best option, both in terms of price and how easy they are to spot.
- For exploring the outer parts of the city and beyond, head to the city’s train station. Nanjing is only an hour away and Shanghai not much further.
