The official name of Lama Temple is Yonghe Temple, or the Palace of Peace and Harmony. Built over the course of several decades, from the late 17th century to the early 18th century, the temple is a remarkable archetype of Han Chinese and Tibetan architecture and creativity. Part Imperial palace, part monastery, the Lama Temple still serves many vital spiritual functions today and welcomes scores of daily visitors. Distinct sections of the temple include the Hall of Harmony and Peace, Hall of Everlasting Protection, Hall of the Wheel of the Law and Pavilion of Ten Thousand Happinesses. The Lama Temple contains many precious works of Buddhist art and sculpture.
