Jing’an Temple

First built in the year 247 in a different location near the Huangpu River, the temple has a remarkable, turbulent and peerless history. The namesake of Shanghai’s Jing’an District has stood in the same spot since 1216, although not always as a Buddhist temple and shrine. Incredibly, Jing’an Temple was a plastics factory throughout most of the Cultural Revolution under Chairman Mao Tse-tung.
